This is a warning about a magic/juggling store that tries to screw over their customers! Please do not do business with this company: Dr. Bob's Magic Shop.
I dropped my 4" and scratched it up pretty bad. I was talking to my mom on the phone after it happened and told her about it and she felt it necessary to buy me a new one and have it shipped to me. She paid for the higher quality ball, not one of the "factory seconds" that they offer."
When I recieved the ball a couple days latter, what I found was a ball in poor condition, one I would assume to be a "factory second." There were quite a few swirl marks from when the ball was made, there were numerous and very visible blemishes and bubles inside of the ball. I called my mom to let her know this since she was the one paying for the ball. She called Bob and he said that we had actually ordered a "factory second" and that's what we got.
That's when I stepped in. I had the sales invoice that he had included with the ball, the price on that invoice was for a higher quality ball, not a "factory second" which was over $15 cheaper than what my mom paid for.
At that time he said that I could return the ball and he would exchange it for a better quality ball. So I did.
Now, keep in mind that the only time I touched this ball was the first day I got it and that was just to take it out of the box, unwrap it from the cellophane, notice the poor quality of the ball, wrap it back up and place it back in the box. I taped the box back up and sent it to Bob. Today I got an e-mail it reads:
"Hello again David,
We received the ball back yesterday.
Have a little problem with the return
The ball received has been used extensively, and dropped.
We NEVER will allow a ball to leave in the condition this was returned
in. Factory seconds are buffed
to determine the exact reason we reject the ball as a "second" - and
new balls are all inspected before they are shipped - to locate the
possible flaws in the shipments received.
We will buff this ball for you - and return it to you.
Customer Service"
My Reply:
"That ball was never once used. I unwrapped it from the cellophane the day I got it, saw the flaws instantly, wrapped it back up and put it in the box and didn't touch it again. I will not except a ball in that kind of condition when I paid for one that was of higher quality! I have done business with your shop three times, the first two transactions were flawless and because of that I have defended your company when others from the juggling community have had issues with your services and have refered numerous people, both jugglers and those looking to start juggling to your store. If I recieve the same ball that I sent back to you, I will take my business elsewhere and make sure to tell everyone else to do the same. On top of that, I still have the receipet, sent by you, showing that the ball I was supposed to receive was of a higher quality and if needed will you that to take legal action to ensure that I either 1) get my money back or 2) get a ball of the quality I originally purchased.
David"
Now, going to the website I see that it says that 4" balls(not the factory seconds) are out of stock. It seems to me that he's got himself in a bind and is trying to get out of a jam by accusing me of messing up the ball. I'm not only frustrated, I'm pissed off about this. 1) Because Dr. Bob is trying to scam the s**t out of me and 2) Because here is a business that I defended and refered people to and now they're screwing me over!
I was e-mailed merely moments later with this:
“Look Kid
I do not react well to threats
You tried to pull a fast switch and got caught
And no other people have had issues with our service - so don't try to
bluff your way thru this
I know what we send - and we never sent the ball out in the condition
received back”
Is this the sign of a professional business? No. Whatever you do, DO NOT do business with this company.

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 2:59 PMWhile I can't speak for Dr. Bob's, I've had nothing but fantastic experiences working with JugglingStore.com
I'm in no way affiliated with the company, just a happy customer. They've always been lightning fast with responses, shipments and everything has arrived in perfect condition.
You might give them a shot if Dr. Bob has really treated you so badly. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 6:07 PMI've used Jugflingstore.com for the two stage balls I have. I was really happy with them. The only reason I went the Dr. Bob route was because the acrylics were cheaper than others I had found.

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 7:35 AMI had done business with them before two, three times before actually and had not only good, but great experiences with them, then this happened and I never will again. It wasn't just a bad experience it was a BAD experience. I was pretty much insulted by it. It just felt like they messed up and in doing so tried to turn it around on me and blame me for it thinking that I was some schmuk that would just be "oh, I'm sorry." They treated it like I was stupid or something.

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 5:26 AMactually someone else just had posted(on .org) within the past couple weeks about recieving thier order VERY late(almost 3 weeks) after paying for priority mail. At that point i defended the company that it was a rare thing indeed, but if this stuff is still happening then there is obviously some problem. Have you actually talked to Dr. Bob? or just made email contact. That seemed to be the resolution the last time, was that some punk kid working there was making life difficult but Bob straightened it out. might want to give it a try.

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 6:58 AMyeah, I defended Bob on that post as well. Since my mom paid for she got on the phone and called. He stuck to his story saying that I had used it and dropped it and that I went about the e-mail wrong. He then defended his workers saying they had been with him for 10 years and wouldn't make a mistake like that. My mom told him he knew that wasn't true and that we would wait until he got his 4"s back in stock to get the exchange but that we better not get the same ball back. He finally agreed. But even before the e-mails we had talked to him on the phone as soon as we got the ball and he told us he wouldn't exchange it because we had actually purchased a "factory second"(those do come with blemishes and swirls etc.). He told us that atleast twice before I finally e-mailed him with the invoice number from the sale. Once he saw that I still had the paper copy of the invoice he changed his mind and said he'd exchange it. Problem is he's out of stock of 4" acrylics and instead of telling us that (which would have been fine, we would have waited) he came up with the story that I had used it. And if I had I would have owned up, but I didn't and I have two other people that saw that I didn't. I have a pretty banged up 4" that I use as a practice ball, my mom bought me this one as a gift because I was having my first performance and she wanted me to have a nice new ball for it. Even if I had wanted to use it, I wouldn't have because I didn't want to risk dropping it before the performance in a week.
I really hate this happened, because I'll never do business with them again. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 10:59 AMAlong these lines, has anyone had any experiences dealing with Neon Husky? I've gotten a few very negative reviews from some local people. Their orders shipped late, they didn't get what they asked for, slow or minimal customer service and similar unpleasant insanities.
I'd enjoy hearing either supporting or conflicting opinions before I consider ordering from them myself. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 3:01 PMi ordered a book from them, but nothing else(it arrived a day early i think). Not sure how thier service is in regards to spheres delivery/quality. but please let us know if you find out anything. :)

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 11:32 AMTwo sides to every story, to be sure; businesses have to always be on the guard for being exploited. However, if through protecting yourself against scams you end up losing business, well...
And they will; I've resolved to not order anything from them based on your story (And I had intended to; I destroyed my acrylic a while ago and have been itching for more). If I'm going to order a lot, it's worth a little extra to know it won't just go down the crapper. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 8:34 AMI agree and don't agree with this.
The amount of money you can lose by wrongly accusing a customer and getting bad publicity is way way way worse than taking a small hit on returning a ball that isn't in perfect shape. They could even buff it and resell it as a second hand and make the money back.
Overall, Dr. Bob, will end up losing more money than he could have possible gained by taking care of his customer....even he was being scammed. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 9:39 AMJuggling is a small community...
CJ has a growing following, but it's still a niche,
and bad press can damage your reputation for years.
This is a raw deal in many ways and for both sides,
customer and business,
yet blaming the customer never helps. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:58 PM
Small businesses deal with more stress than large ones.
There are no large juggling stores.
Therefore, juggling store operators are ALWAYS stressed.
I've traded static with most juggling stores and mfrs around the world at one time or another (as customer, vendor, or product reviewer), but it almost always gets worked out when everyone cools down. The only one that hasn't for me is Serious Juggling, and I'm not the only one with this problem. Several vendors and at least one festival operator have a standing rule to talk to Ben only. Some customers have learned to do likewise. YMMV., but the best way to keep out of Serious trouble is to always ask to speak with Ben.

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:25 PMAlright, so here's the conclusion of this whole ordeal.
After not hearing anything from him I filed a complaint through the better business beuro. At this point I found out that BBB gave Dr. Bob's a D rating which means extreme caution should be taken when doing business with this company. He never answered my complaint(I'm not the only unanswered complaint against Bob) on BBB either. Today he finally called and said I knew I played with the ball and that he was done doing business with me because I filed a complaint through BBB (did he expect otherwise? and did he expect that after all this I'd want to do business with him?). So finally, it's all said and done and I'm through dealing with Dr. Bob.
I'd just STRONGLY urge all of you to find somewhere else to buy your balls instead of this place. If not from what I said, from the fact that so many people have had issues with this business that they've gotten a D through the BBB. -

Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:52 PMtruly sorry to hear that this is how it turned out. it truly is a shame to be let down by a company that by many reports was fine. I havent had any problems but it will certainly be a while before i purchase anything there again. so sad.... -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Magic/Juggling Store Warning
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 9:56 AMHad good experiences dealing with both Dr. Bob/Magicstor and Neon Husky. Although I think Dr. Bob sells directly to Neon Husky. That's an unfortunate situation. If it was bougt with credit card, why don't you just call your company and explain the situation. You'll probably get your money back. -
