Re: i need a little help
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:11 PMi would recommend just looking online for tutorials through Youtube and whatnot...you could also order James Ernests' Contact Juggling book...its considered by many to be "the Bible" of CJ...
here's some pointers off the top of my head:
1) have fun! dont be discouraged if you put in a lot of practice time and still have little to show for it...CJ takes a lot of time and patience to become proficient at.
2)practice with someone else who can already CJ-your rate of improvement will increase dramatically!
3)practice sitting down at first, (i like to sit on nice green grass) or standing over a bed-makes picking the ball up so much quicker. also, the ball doesnt get scuffed and doesnt destroy things :)
4) for most moves you want to be as completely relaxed yet in control as possible...hard to explain but imagine a field of grass that undulates as a prairie wind sweeps through it. you want to be that grass-yet still be in control physically.
4)listen to some music that puts you in the "zone" so to speak...i find i have a much more profound practice session listening to some downtempo beats or music like triphop, mushroom jazz, ambient, psybient, chill...the lower tempo seems to calm me and my motions seem more fluid-thats just me!
4)while learning the foundations of CJ (the butterfly, transfers from one hand to the next etc.) is very important in regards to form and execution, dont be afraid to "experiment" and just spend time playing with the ball and take enjoyment from small discoveries of how to roll the ball...while books, online tutorials and DVD's are great resources, there is no substitute for firsthand experience-so get out there and practice! :)
hope this helps!
wishing you well on your journey to be a CJ ninja :)

Re: i need a little help
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 5:06 PMDJ DVD #1 is great and helped me out a lot! I got it about 4 months after I started and realized that I was doing a lot wrong and if I followed what they said tricks were much easier to do!
Check out contactjuggling.org (though it seems to be down at the moment).
*BIG TIP* If you get frustrated or even feel like you're about to get frustrated, put the ball down and don't touch it for the rest of the day!!!!!!!!!!! That was a very very hard lesson for me to learn, but it's the #1 thing that helped me learn what I did. Getting frustrated is not only going to not allow you to learn moves, it'll be counterproductive and put you back some. But if you put the ball down, give it a day and go back to it when you're nice and relaxed the move will come with ease!
