i have been CJ'ing for a couple months and have learned some basics...i would really like to get together with some other "ballers" and expand my horizons! i'm wondering if there are any meet-ups in for CJ in Tucson or Phoenix...if not-lets make one!

i live about 2 hours from Tucson and 3 hours from PHX so i'd be limited to a bi weekly or monthly meetup. i offer good company and positive vibes to any fellow CJer who would be interested in supporting this micro-community. if your an absolute novice i have a couple dvd's that i'd be willing to share...then we can create our own AZ CJ group from the ground up! :) Thanks in advance for your time!

I've heard that the illusion doesn't look as good with LED as it does in the light with an acrylic, is that true? I suppose it's all a matter of opinion. I was also considering buying an LED juggling ball online, but I can't find any that are rechargeable. Does anyone know where I could find a rechargeable one? (Well, actually I found these: http://www.neonhusky.com/JShop/product.php/364/1 but they say they are "soft", so I don't know if that will work.)

The first time picked up the ball I knew I wouldn't be able to stop till I had it. Thing is I've got a tendency to barely learn how to do something and then just let it ride, so I'm hoping to meet some folks who can keep on my ass about practicing. Anyone from MO? I mainly kick it in springfield, so I'd love to meet anyone close by who could teach me a few things. Thanks

Right now I am using a tennis ball filled with rice and have ordered an acrylic 3 inch ball. ANY POINTERS AND INSIGHT on how to start my endeavor would very much appreciated.

Anyhow, I've also always loved belly dance, as my mother was a belly dancer (trained by Aisha Ali, if you're familliar with her) when I was a kid. It seems to me that a great deal of belly dance could be compimentary to cj. I'm sure i am not the only one who has noticed this. I have been practicing to Arabic music (Orange Blossom is amazing..give them a listen if you get the chance). Though I am a guy, and as such find aspects of belly dance nigh on impossible, I still think that the movements are very compatable. Also, incorportating them would keep one from being locked in place, you know? Any thoughts on this?

When i was living in England at the Hangar, I did a lot of research into hoop isolations, fixed point and, for lack of a better term, 'moving isolations.' Jago (www.jagoja.co.uk) introduced us to this great way of creating metallic hoops out of hula-hoops and circus tape; I remember at the first British contact juggling convention in 2004 watching him spin and manipulate them in his slow fluid style; reminded me of Moschen's routine. Afterwards we played around, we found some cool isolations, enigma style ones, My friend Drew showed us the snake technique (from staff and contact club) and we got a great iso from that... buncha other neat ones too; it was a really exciting time. I made a show called Anomalies with Jago which had manipulation with 1-6 hoops and we made an agreement with beard juggling to manufacture aluminium hoops for the show. I dont think they sell them anymore, but you can still make your own plastic ones with a bit of work.

Anomalies was fun, but kinda technical and draining. I wanted to do something that involved more character and narrative. With that in mind, I spent a good part a year working with my friend Anna from Budapest on a side project, a 30 minute show called Transition; and we eventually put our work on stage at the sziget festival in 2006.

I saw the recent post about isolation hoops for sale, and thought i'd add my bit to the growing hoop iso scene with this bit of old footage:

This is a warning about a magic/juggling store that tries to screw over their customers! Please do not do business with this company: Dr. Bob's Magic Shop.

I dropped my 4" and scratched it up pretty bad. I was talking to my mom on the phone after it happened and told her about it and she felt it necessary to buy me a new one and have it shipped to me. She paid for the higher quality ball, not one of the "factory seconds" that they offer."

When I recieved the ball a couple days latter, what I found was a ball in poor condition, one I would assume to be a "factory second." There were quite a few swirl marks from when the ball was made, there were numerous and very visible blemishes and bubles inside of the ball. I called my mom to let her know this since she was the one paying for the ball. She called Bob and he said that we had actually ordered a "factory second" and that's what we got.

That's when I stepped in. I had the sales invoice that he had included with the ball, the price on that invoice was for a higher quality ball, not a "factory second" which was over $15 cheaper than what my mom paid for.

At that time he said that I could return the ball and he would exchange it for a better quality ball. So I did.

Now, keep in mind that the only time I touched this ball was the first day I got it and that was just to take it out of the box, unwrap it from the cellophane, notice the poor quality of the ball, wrap it back up and place it back in the box. I taped the box back up and sent it to Bob. Today I got an e-mail it reads:

"Hello again David,

We received the ball back yesterday.

Have a little problem with the return

The ball received has been used extensively, and dropped.

We NEVER will allow a ball to leave in the condition this was returned
in. Factory seconds are buffed
to determine the exact reason we reject the ball as a "second" - and
new balls are all inspected before they are shipped - to locate the
possible flaws in the shipments received.

We will buff this ball for you - and return it to you.

Customer Service"

My Reply:

"That ball was never once used. I unwrapped it from the cellophane the day I got it, saw the flaws instantly, wrapped it back up and put it in the box and didn't touch it again. I will not except a ball in that kind of condition when I paid for one that was of higher quality! I have done business with your shop three times, the first two transactions were flawless and because of that I have defended your company when others from the juggling community have had issues with your services and have refered numerous people, both jugglers and those looking to start juggling to your store. If I recieve the same ball that I sent back to you, I will take my business elsewhere and make sure to tell everyone else to do the same. On top of that, I still have the receipet, sent by you, showing that the ball I was supposed to receive was of a higher quality and if needed will you that to take legal action to ensure that I either 1) get my money back or 2) get a ball of the quality I originally purchased.

David"

Now, going to the website I see that it says that 4" balls(not the factory seconds) are out of stock. It seems to me that he's got himself in a bind and is trying to get out of a jam by accusing me of messing up the ball. I'm not only frustrated, I'm pissed off about this. 1) Because Dr. Bob is trying to scam the s**t out of me and 2) Because here is a business that I defended and refered people to and now they're screwing me over!

I was e-mailed merely moments later with this:

“Look Kid

I do not react well to threats

You tried to pull a fast switch and got caught

And no other people have had issues with our service - so don't try to

bluff your way thru this

I know what we send - and we never sent the ball out in the condition
received back”

Is this the sign of a professional business? No. Whatever you do, DO NOT do business with this company.

Take for instance the CJ.org chest roll tutorial, he simply places the ball on his hand and rolls it around his chest, that's not a tutorial, that's a showing that you know how to do it.

Look for the clip labeled "main de feu," hands of fire. Some of it is, strictly speaking, gaffed and not actually CJ. But the style is derived from CJ, with the addition of some rather new (to me) poi effects.

If you can't find it, look for the blank, unlabeled clip, with the almost black screen.

Workshop/ Jam session at the Cherry Beach Promise Parties!

I will be teaching at the level that arrives, and I am just trying to get the seeds planted in this community to create a plethora of new contact jugglers in this city!

come and PLAY YAY!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Promise Cherry Beach Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem

Bring a frisbee, bring a kite, bring a handy sweater, bring a dog (only nice dogs), bring your lover and a hammock. And pass the time on this lazy sunny Sunday afternoon with friends and friends of friends.

3 to 11pm

Dan Driscoll - trip hop
Violet - dub reggae
Hali - house
Orly - retro and electro
Rollin Cash - break beats from the birthday boy - congratulations Roland!
Adam Marshall - deep house and techno
Mental Floss - deep groove

Directions to Cherry Beach and the new location - With consideration to ongoing construction and landscaping, the site may move around the park from weekend to weekend, which is kind of interesting. We have a meeting at the beach friday morning with Parks staff to determine the location for this Sunday. We will email and let you know in the evening just where it is.

Biking to Cherry Beach is easy along the paths beside the lake, and a bus from Union Station goes there too.

Things to think about - Please bring only what you plan to take back out with you, leave no trace! Pack something warm (it gets cool after dark by the lake) and something to sit on and also something to keep sun off your head. Drink lots of water. Bring something to share.

And remember how key it is to take care of your friends, your neighbours, and what's going on around you. It's what makes Cherry Beach happen smoothly.

We have been asked by Parks to put a lid on public consumption of alcohol, which is reasonable. It’s delicate and we have a trial permit, so understand that alcohol in public spaces is not ok. David and Irving will need to keep an eye out, so please don’t let us see any. We will have friends helping to remind people of this over the weekend. If we all cooperate here, then we get to have our good times.

For the past 5 years the picnic’s been free. Now with the permit, insurance, soundsystem and other weekly expenses, we’d like to ask for your help. From time to time we’ll be passing around a hat, please contribute as you are able. Thanks a lot!

Looking for djs, bands and other performances
Over the course of the summer there’s about 80 djs, bands and artists that perform. We’d love your help and suggestions and any contacts you may have to make the performances happen. Last summer’s stunning hit was the Jimmy Swift Band from Nova Scotia, arranged by our friend Derek in synch with the band’s appearance at NXNE. If you’re bringing in a dj or band or performance, ask them to make an appearance at the beach part of their weekend in Toronto. They may embrace the chance to play outdoors, away from the hype and lights of a club, to a happy and enthusiastic crowd like ours. Think big and let us know.

Thanks for reading, see you Sunday!

cheers,
David and Irving

I'm guessing a lot of you do other stuff besides cj, spin fire, hoola hoop, uni cycle, play music etc. Well here is what I am noticing in my practice with cj, some days it seems to take me forever to get "warmed up" and flowing. It seems with cj it can take a lot longer to warm up than with other things I do. Was just wondering if there is something I am missing that may be making it harder on certain days than others, stuff like, humidity in the air, lotion on my skin, too cold of hands, sleeves versus no sleeves versus type of sleeves etc.

question is what impairments have you noticed internally/externaly that you avoid.

Thanks in advance!
cheers,
A very large posting by Ferret, as he met Michael Moschen this weekend...

"He asked me to relay to This Community…(although he doubts he will post anything…)
He told me to Give You All, His Best!
No bitterness.. No hard feelings. "
The short sum of a very great post. :) I thought you all should know it was there.

But I am sucking, like a very sucky thing, at chest rolls. I thought I'd have this nailed in no time, but it's turned out to be a real bitch. I'm more likely to wallop myself on the chin than do it right and the few times I have managed it, I look like a crackhead octopus. Anybody have some advice on how to work on this? It's such a basic move, and involved in more complex moves. I really want to get it right.
